What is a low-carbon travel?
There isn't really an official definition, and many tourism operators take advantage of this legal vacuum to spread misleading messages and engage in greenwashing. At HURRAIL! we've made a number of simple commitments:
No plane and no car
On this website, you'll never find a journey by plane or private car, or else it'll mean we've been hacked by the oil lobbies. Two simple rules that will drastically reduce your carbon footprint.
No bullshit
Being a media committed to low-carbon travel doesn't mean we are perfect perfect, and our itineraries can obviously not be 0-carbon. Hence, we're working on a carbon calculator that will enable us to display the carbon footprint of each itinerary, in complete transparency.
For maximum pleasure!
But of course, our number 1 mission is to show you that traveling differently can also lead to unforgettable discoveries and adventures. In fact, we're convinced that it often adds even more flavour to your trip.
What about the ferry, is it low carbon?
For some itineraries, we offer a ferry stopover, but only under certain conditions:
There is no other carbon-free alternative (train, sail...) with regular departures.
The distance covered by ferry is as short as possible.
Compliance with this last rule generally means a much lower carbon footprint than for the same journey by plane, even if ferry travel cannot be considered an environmentally-friendly mode of transport. In addition to their GHG emissions, these large ships are also very disruptive to marine life. The other interesting thing about this type of mobility is that it also allows us to reconsider our relationship with time, and encourages a form of sobriety in terms of mileage. It's hard to imagine a two-day citytrip to Dublin by train and ferry...
However, our philosophy is not to do without hydrocarbons altogether, but simply to consider them as a last resort.
