A low-cost train connection between Paris and Marseille? It will soon be possible (from June 15, 2025). Following the reopening of the Paris-Lyon-Milan line, Trenitalia (Italy's leading state-owned railway company, the equivalent of SNCF in France) is continuing its expansion on French rails. And the company has no intention of stopping there, since a Rome-Munich link (in 2026) and Paris-London (in 2029) are already in the pipeline! It has to be said that, with the arrival of the French TGV-M on the Italian market, expansion beyond borders is becoming a pillar of the Italian group's growth strategy. So, what can we expect? Zoom in on the new train lines announced by Trenitalia.
We've been waiting for it, and now it's here! Following the reopening of the Paris-Milan line on March 31, Trenitalia's new line will open on June 15.
With 2 round-trips a day to start with (eventually 4), you'll be able to travel directly to the Phocaean city from Paris in around 3 hours 40 minutes, via Lyon, Avignon and Aix-en-Provence.
And the price? Very competitive fares compared to SNCF's TGV Inoui, with tickets starting from €27 in second class and €37 in Business (their premium second class)!
Enjoy the charm of Rome or Milan before heading off to discover Munich, and all without having to take a plane or drive once? We're told it could soon be possible (opening planned for 2026)!
Trenitalia has signed a preliminary agreement with Germany's Deutsche Bahn to launch Frecciarossa high-speed trains between Italy and Germany. The project is part of a European Commission action plan to develop long-distance cross-border services, and is one of 10 pilot projects selected to improve international rail connectivity in Europe.
In practice, the Frecciarossa is scheduled to link Rome and Milan with Munich, with strategic stops in Florence, Bologna, Verona, Trento, Bolzano, Brenner and Innsbruck.
Cheap train fares to London coming soon! The Italian company is also aiming for the Channel Tunnel by 2029, with a competing high-speed service between London St Pancras and Gare du Nord in Paris.
Please note that this project is currently at the discussion stage. To compete with Eurostar, the Italian company will first have to invest 1 billion euros! But if this project goes ahead, the arrival of Trenitalia on this route could seriously lower prices. To be continued...
