Ah, Munich... With its warm atmosphere, cozy cafés, incredible cultural heritage, magnificent parks where you can stroll for hours, historic architecture and local markets, there are a thousand and one reasons to visit the Bavarian capital. If you've only got a day to spare, don't panic: we've put together two itineraries for you, depending on the weather! One for a sunny day, the other for a rainy one. Follow the guide!
We start in the beating heart of Munich! With its neo-Gothic Town Hall, this historic square is the ideal starting point for exploring the city (a fifteen-minute walk from the train station). If you're there at 11 a.m., take the opportunity to admire the Glockenspiel, a mechanical clock that comes to life twice a day (at 11 a.m., noon and also at 5 p.m. from March to October). A beautiful clock show designed as a journey through time, with life-size figurines dancing before your eyes.
La superbe Marienplatz
Just a stone's throw away, you'll find the majestic Frauenkirche (Cathedral of Our Lady), with its famous twin towers topped with green domes. For a breathtaking view of the city - and if the weather's on your side, of the Alps - climb to the top of one of the towers!

After your visit to the cathedral, head for Kaufingerstraße, the pedestrian street par excellence for shoppers and window-shoppers. Between boutiques, department stores and cafés where you can sip an espresso and watch the world go by, you're sure to find what you're looking for.

If your stomach is starting to get hungry, head for the Viktualienmarkt! This famous open-air market is the perfect place to sample Bavarian specialities or take a well-deserved lunch break (it also works if you're on the dessert or snack trail: the pastries, confectionery and other sweet delights are also worth a visit). This little gastronomic paradise has been around for over 200 years and is renowned for its colorful stalls filled with local produce. In short, a must-stop to recharge your batteries (and delight your taste buds)!
Un marché en plein air pas comme les autres
After the historic center, we suggest you discover the Englischer Garten, one of the world's largest urban parks. You can stroll through the vast green expanses, rent a boat on the lake, or simply soak up the sun with a book in hand.

To crown your day, take a fifteen-minute walk to the Maximilianeum, the seat of the Bavarian Parliament. The view over Munich and the River Isar is simply superb, especially at golden hour. As well as the panorama, we recommend going there for the atmosphere: many young Munichers meet up with friends here at the end of the day. The ideal place to end your day at golden hour before strolling along the river.

If you're still in shape, spend the evening in Glockenbachviertel. Renowned for its lively nightlife, sometimes reminiscent of Berlin's trendy districts, the area is packed with trendy bars, clubs and cafés. Whether you're looking for a refined cocktail, a craft beer or a night of dancing, you're bound to find what you're looking for!
The district is also known for its diversity and openness (it's the historic heart of Munich's LGBTQ+ community). It's also where you'll find many thrift stores, antique shops, concept stores and other original design boutiques.
Even when it's raining, the famous Marienplatz is a must-see. Take shelter under the arcades of the Town Hall and enjoy the lively square. Once again, be sure to attend the Glockenspiel to enjoy the show, even under your umbrella!
There's little chance of enjoying the magnificent panoramic view from one of the towers if the sky is gray. On the other hand, the imposing interior of the Frauenkirche (Our Lady's Cathedral) will offer you a superb temporary refuge from the rain! This cathedral, rich in history and sacred art, should offer you a well-deserved break with its impressive stained glass windows, majestic organ and peaceful ambience.

What better way to forget the rain than with a good museum? The Deutsches Museum is the world's largest science and technology museum (no less)! Immerse yourself in fascinating interactive exhibits, from space exploration to robotics to renewable energies... You're guaranteed to lose track of time.

For art lovers, Maxvorstadt is THE place to be. This museum district is packed with galleries and cultural venues. Don't miss the Pathos Kreativquartier, a creative space where you can discover contemporary art exhibitions, shows and participatory workshops! The perfect place to end the afternoon in an artistic atmosphere, even in the rain.

To finish off the day, we suggest you head to Schwabing, Munich's bohemian district. Even if the rain persists, you'll find cosy cafés for shelter, art galleries to marvel at, and restaurants with cuisines from all over the world for a comforting dinner. A gentle, relaxing end to your Munich adventure!
